The Real Mary
Some blogs I read for fun, some because they're kindreds, some to be encouraged and some when I'm up for a challenge. The diversity is appealing. I read both people with whom I have much in common, and those who I will never see eye-to-eye with. Perhaps it is those writers from whom I learn the most, they certainly give me pause to think about ideas I might not consider otherwise. The difference of opinion is not threatening, although, I suppose a few years back, that's not something I could say. One of the aspects most appreciated is being routed to other great posts, sometimes to an author I know, often to one I don't. Thanks to all of you who help me get around :).
When I have enough time to think and I feel like going to "class", I read Scot McKnight. According to his bio, "McKnight is a widely-recognized authority on the New Testament, early Christianity, and the historical Jesus. He is the Karl A. Olsson Professor in Religious Studies at North Park University (Chicago, Illinois), where he is also the Department Chair and the Director of the College of Christian Life and Thought. A popular and witty speaker, Dr. McKnight has given interviews on radios across the nation, has appeared on television, and is regularly asked to speak in local churches and educational events. Dr. McKnight obtained his Ph.D. at the University of Nottingham (1986).... He is the author of more than twenty books, including the award-winning The Jesus Creed: Loving God, Loving Others (Paraclete, 2004), which won the Christianity Today book of the year for Christian Living."
Recently, I saw a post that got my attention (okay, all of them get my attention, this one included a free book!). It explains the motive for this post. Rather than write any more, click here to read the first two chapters of his soon-to-be-released book, The Real Mary, Why Evangelical Christians Can Embrace the Mother of Jesus. This will be an interesting read; as a mainline Protestant, I have never studied the person of Mary. I'm expectant to consider a new dimension to Jesus, too, in the process.

One of my hopes is that when we die we can experience, see, understand, and talk to people or events in history.
For instance - I'd like to see the Columbia River as Lewis&Clark saw it.
I want to see the Roman Empire in all its glory
See who really kiled JFK - the list goes on....
Well, now add to that, I'd like to visit Mary and ask her a bunch of questions.

I know you know that I love people who love diversity, and who can also appreciate people for who they are and how they got that way and not judge.

That book does sound interesting! I always admired the "real" person of Mary...just a young girl who was so submissive to God's calling for such an important task. I'll look into this...thank you!
As usual, we're thinking similar thoughts! (Remember my post on Mary?) This will be an interesting read. I'm just starting to delve into McKnight. (The jury's still out... *-))
Tammy....welcome newbie! E-mom, I thought of you, too. Scot's been under some fire, I guess all emergents stay under fire from mainlines. All I know is he (and others) sound v e r y generous with their words. And kind. And loving. Nuff said.
I can NOT wait to buy this book so I can read more. Then I seen the movie trailor for The Nativity Story.... I can not wait for it either :) Thanks for sharing this!!
When I have more time (like never) - I will have to check the link out this weekend...I really want to be reading again, but I have to 'steal' moments during lunch to finish a book I have been trying to read for the last six months - maybe I just need to not sleep anymore - lol...
